Find out if you have a dialup modem - Windows XP
Before you decide to sign up for a dialup account, you need to make sure that your computer is equipped with a dialup modem.
If you look at the back side of your computer, you should see different kinds of ports: USB, Ethernet, Dialup, Serial, Parallel, Video, etc.
If you have a dialup modem, it should have at least one port that looks exactly like the phone plug in your wall outlet. Try inserting a phone cord in that modem port (in the back of your computer), if it fits snuggly, clips into place nicely, then it should be a dialup modem. If the port you're using looks just like a phone port, but is a little too wide, then it is an Ethernet port, not compatible with dialup. Try another port.
If you really cannot find any port in which you can plug in a phone cord snugly, then you probably don't have a dialup modem. Unless you have an external dialup modem, in which case you should be able to read expressions such as K56 or V90 on it, and you should be able to plug that phone cord into on of its ports.
If you find out that you do not have any dialup modem, but would still like to subscribe for dialup Internet, you will need to purchase a dialup modem. They should be easy to find in stores that carry computer parts such as Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Max, Office Depot, your local PC repair shop, etc. Just ask the sales person for a dialup modem, and also ask if they can install it for you if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself. The easiest kind to install yourself is the external modem kind (you don't need to open the computer case to install it).
If you are running Windows XP, you can double-check whether or not you have a modem by doing the following:
1 - Click on the Start menu, then click on Control Panel (you might need to click on Settings first, then Control Panel, depending on your version of Windows XP).
2 - From the Control Panel, double-click on the icon called Phone and Modem Options. If you do not see this icon anywhere, please click on Switch to Classic View, then double-click on Phone and Modem Options:
3 - You should now see a window similar to this one, called Phone and Modem Options:
Click on the second tab, called Modems:
If you do have a dialup modem, you should see its name in this tab, under Modem.
If you do not see anything listed (like on the screenshot), then most likely, you do not have a dialup modem, or it's not been installed properly.
For instructions on how to install your modem, please consult your dialup modem instructions (if you have bought a modem), or the instructions manual that came with your computer when you bought it (they might be on a CD-rom instead of a printed document).
